  • Provenance: Private Collection, British Columbia

Siskind began in the Photo League with social-documentary projects (e.g., Harlem Document, 1930s). In the 1940s he turned decisively to abstraction, photographing walls, peeling posters, tar, graffiti, sea-eroded stone, driftwood, numbers and letters so close and so flat that the subject becomes a plane of marks rather than a scene. He printed with rich blacks and high contrast, often on 2¼-inch square negatives (Rolleiflex), to stress gesture, texture, and rhythm.
His work ran in parallel with—and was championed by—Abstract Expressionist painters (de Kooning, Kline, Motherwell). Rather than "finding pictures," Siskind constructed pictorial space from fragments: compressing depth, cropping hard, and letting calligraphic scratches, tears, and stains read like drawing. The result is photography that behaves like painting while remaining resolutely photographic.
  • Condition: This print is in good condition overall.
Passage of ferrotyping at upper margin of image, only visible in direct reflected light.
A few scattered, minor to moderate handling marks at upper and lower quadrants.

The condition reports for the lots offered by Santa Fe Art Auction (SFAA) are provided as a courtesy and convenience for potential buyers. The reports are not intended to nor do they substitute for physical examination by a buyer or the buyer's advisors. The condition reports are prepared by SFAA staff members who are not art conservators or restorers, nor do they possess the qualifications needed for comprehensive evaluation. Each condition report is an opinion of the staff member and should not be treated as a statement of fact. The absence of a condition report does not imply anything as to the condition of a particular lot. Buyers are reminded that the limited warranties are set forth in the Terms and Conditions of Sale and do not extend to condition. Each lot is sold as-is.
