After Frank Lloyd Wright

(1869 - 1859)

Nakoma and Nakomis, 1974

bronze, edition 128 of 500
Nakoma is a Chippewa word meaning 'I do as I promise'. A version of the name, Nokomis, appears in Longfellow's 1856 poem Song of Hiawatha. Originally conceived by the architect Frank Lloyd Wright in the terra-cotta medium in 1929-1930, the present works were cast in 1974 from molds created from original terra-cotta sculptures. In December 1973, The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation granted Thomas Nelson Hubbard a license to produce editions of 500 in bronze to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the original designs.
