  • Provenance: Private Collection, Colorado

Allan Capron Houser was a pioneering Chiricahua Apache sculptor and painter. He trained at the Santa Fe Indian School's Studio under Dorothy Dunn, gained early national visibility through New Deal–era commissions, including murals for the U.S. Department of the Interior building in Washington, D.C., in 1939, and later helped shape generations of artists after joining the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) faculty, where he launched its sculpture program. After retiring from teaching in 1975 he devoted himself to sculpture full time, becoming internationally celebrated for modern, elegantly simplified Indigenous forms, and in 1992 he became the first Native American to receive the National Medal of Arts.
