  • Provenance: Private Collection, Tennessee

Navajo sculptor Alvin Marshall transforms alabaster stone into deeply spiritual works that honor his heritage and community. Taken from his reservation as a child and forbidden to speak his language in boarding school, Marshall later reconnected with his culture through his grandparents and channels those traditions into his art. A U.S. Army veteran and former illustrator, he began sculpting while living on the Shiprock Reservation, often collecting stone with friend and mentor Oreland Joe. Marshall views his work as a collaboration with nature and spirit, often inspired by dreams, memories, and the people of the Navajo Nation. Celebrated for his artistry with awards and major exhibitions—including at the Heard Museum and Desert Caballeros—he remains dedicated to creating one-of-a-kind figurative pieces that reflect Navajo life and spirituality.
