  • Provenance: Private Collection, New Mexico

This is an early "parchment paper" print by Adam's, printed on Kodak Vitava Athena Grade T "parchment" paper. Adam's used this paper for his first portfolio, "Parmelian Prints of the High Sierras", 1927—a set of 18 small gelatin silver prints he printed himself and issued in letterpress wrappers under publisher Jean Chambers Moore. The made-up word "Parmelian" was Moore's idea to avoid calling them "photographs," which she feared would be taken less seriously as art; Adams later regretted the term and the plural "Sierras" in the title.
After the 1927 Parmelian Prints of the High Sierras, Adams continued—briefly—to make small, warm-toned gelatin silver prints on the same Kodak "parchment" paper (Vitava Athena, Grade T). He sold and gifted these as individual prints, often titled in pencil at lower left and signed at lower right on a larger cream mount. Subjects from his 1927–29 Southwest trips (pueblos, missions, desert architecture) appear in this group, including images like this one, "Pueblo Laguna, New Mexico, 1928."
Although "Parmelian" was an invented word, it marks the moment Adams positioned his work as fine art—despite the euphemistic label he soon disowned.
  • Condition: This photograph is in very good condition overall.
Minor silvering at right margin of the image. Minor adhesive remnants at the corners. Minor rippling at the print margins.
