  • Provenance: Private Collection, New Mexico

Beatrice Wood, an influential American artist and ceramicist, was born in San Francisco and raised in New York City. After abandoning her privileged background, she moved to Paris at nineteen to study acting and drawing, later becoming involved with the Dada movement in New York, alongside Marcel Duchamp.

Wood's interest in ceramics began in 1928, after moving to California and taking an adult education course on how to make a teapot. Later, she studied with noted ceramic artists Otto and Gertrud Natzler, which led her to develop her signature iridescent luster-glazed ceramics. By the late 1940s, Wood had mastered the innovative technique of using in-glaze luster in a single firing, producing works that exuded a theatrical and expressive quality. Her pioneering approach elevated luster-glazed ceramics, making her a central figure in mid-century American craft.

Each condition report is an opinion of the staff member and should not be treated as a statement of fact. The absence of a condition report does not imply anything as to the condition of a particular lot.
