Darryl Dean Begay

(Diné [Navajo])

Hopi Maiden Bracelet

silver, Momo coral, Lone Mountain turquoise

Tufa-casting master, Daryl Dean Begay depicts the Hopi Pueblo at Hotevilla, Charles Loloma's home. The central figure is a Hopi Maiden with Lone Mountain Turquoise for her head and Momo Coral for her body. To the right we see Charles driving his famous and beloved Porsche under a crescent moon. Darryl tells the story that at a very early age as a jeweler he was privileged to meet Charles' longtime apprentice Verma Nequatewa (Sonwai) who passed on to him that one of the most important things Charles ever taught was to always use the very best materials. Darryl absorbed this into his own lifetime practice as a jeweler. The Momo Coral and Lone Mountain in this cuff, from Loloma's own collection, exemplify this standard and are of a quality no longer available.
