Diné (Navajo)

Memory Aid with Storm/Rain-Cloud Yei

pigments on muslin
40 1/2 x 24 1/2 in. (102.9 x 62.2 cm.)

  • Provenance: Private Collection, California

In the early 1980s, artists began making sandpainting-style images on muslin bed sheets as "memory aids", sketches of successful sandpaintings used by a medicine man to plan an accurate design for a healing ceremony. A Diné medicine man explained that reproducing ceremonial imagery must be done with great accuracy and spiritual care, with certain figures considered too dangerous to circulate or sell. Although inspired by ceremonial practice, these muslins were not created for or used in ceremonies and are regarded as folk art.
