John Edward "Ed" Borein was a California-born etcher, painter, and illustrator celebrated for exceptionally authentic images of the working West, showing vaqueros, cowboys, horses, cattle, and Native life, drawn from firsthand experience. As a young man he spent years riding and working as a cowboy across the American West and into Mexico, sketching what he saw with a quick, confident line. He later turned those observations into a prolific body of drawings, watercolors, and especially etchings prized for their accuracy and energy. In the early 1900s he established himself professionally as an artist, including time in New York developing his printmaking, and in his later decades he was closely associated with Santa Barbara, where he remained highly productive and influential, including teaching etching.
