Assiniboin, Great Plains

Mosquito Hawk is an Assiniboine - a member of the Sioux nation, one of the fiercest and most famous of the Northern Plains tribes. Its beauty and simplicity help make this a highly desirable Curtis portrait. The subjects personal strength an classic profile enhance the portraits beauty. The simplicity of the classic composition and lighting further enhance the image.
"Born on the Missouri below Williston, North Dakota. When he was 14 he followed a war-party but gained no honors. On his next four Expeditions he had as little success, but on the next he killed a Sioux. He fought against the Piegan, killing two, taking a scalp and counting a first coup. In another battle with the Piegan he killed one, counted coup and took a scalp. He married at seventeen" – The North American Indian
