Navaho, Southwest

The knowledge of an oracle, heart of a crusader, and patient gaze of a teacher. Hatali represented all of these to the Navajo people. In his youth he fought alongside Geronimo, and during his lifetime he gathered the wisdom of a medicine man. After the Navajo nation surrendered (1866), he rose to prominence as a leader. Here we see his chosen adornments from all the phases of his being; symbolic dragonflies, objects of trade, and the enduring beadwork traditions of his people.
