Edward S. Curtis

(1868 - 1952)

Alchise - Apache, 1906

photogravure on Japanese gampi tissue with original Van Gelder overmat
"Chief of the White Mountain Apache.  A well-known character, having been a scout with General Crook.  Colonel Conley, who was chief of scouts under Crook, says a braver man than Alchise never lived.  He was about twenty-two years of age when Fort Apache, then Camp Ord was established in 1870, making the year of his birth about 1848.  This portrait was made at Alchise's camp on White river in the spring of 1903."- The North American Indian.
This is a very unusual and beautiful Curtis portrait.  The luminous, atmospheric lighting and the narrow depth of field are classic pictorialist elements which add to this photograph's beauty.
