Edward S. Curtis

(1868 - 1952)

Edward S. Curtis Self Portrait, 1951

silver gelatin print - toned
signed and dated lower right: Edward S. Curtis / Feb. 20 1951
inscribed lower center: [personalized inscription]

Negative date: 1951

Print date: 1951

This is a very uncommon self portrait showing Edward Curtis in 1951 at the age of 83. In addition, Curtis wrote the inscription a day after his 83rd birthday. He would pass away in October of 1952. Another very unique aspect of this print is that it includes a variation of the two-toned border that was used on some of Curtis' exhibition silver gelatin prints. In this print there is a single-toned border around the image, which was created in the darkroom, using printing masks and exposure to light, so that the border is part of the final printed presentation. The image is printed on a double-weight, lightly-textured, luster surface silver gelatin paper.
9 7/8 x 8 in. (25.1 x 20.3 cm.), sheet: 13 7/8 x 11 in. (35.2 x 27.9 cm.), frame: 16 x 13 x 1 in. (40.6 x 33 x 2.5 cm.)
