  • Provenance: Lee Male / Ledel Gallery, New York
by descent to Judith Male, 1997

Ledel Gallery, founded in 1981 by photographer and collector Lee Male in New York City's SOHO art district, was a pioneering space dedicated to Fine Art Photography. Lee, inspired by mentors like Larry Colwell and her admiration for Edward S. Curtis, was able to build a significant photography collection. Her close ties with key figures like Cornell Capa allowed her to showcase renowned photographers such as Ruth Bernhard, Esther Bubley, and Barbara Morgan, alongside iconic masters like Berenice Abbott. Lee's dedication to promoting both established and emerging artists left an indelible mark on the photography world before her passing in 1997.

The condition reports are prepared by SFAA staff members who are not art conservators or restorers, nor do they possess the qualifications needed for comprehensive evaluation. Each condition report is an opinion of the staff member and should not be treated as a statement of fact. The absence of a condition report does not imply anything as to the condition of a particular lot.
