Edward S. Curtis

(1868 - 1952)

Volume XIV: The Photogravures, 7 California Tribes, 69 Prints

photogravure on Japanese vellum, Japanese gampi tissue and Holland Van Gelder etching stocks
This is a collection of 69 photogravures from Volume 14 of Curtis' The North American Indian set of books. During the several years Curtis spent doing fieldwork in California, he lived with and studied more than fifteen northern and central California tribes. Curtis delicately pieced together a coherent ethnographic study from many sources, and the three volumes and portfolios of The North American Indian dedicated to the California Indians give us an excellent understanding of these tribes and their histories.
Published in the year 1924, these Volume 14 photogravures depict 7 tribes from Northern and Central California. Specifically, the Kato, Maidu, Miwok, Pomo, Wailaki, Yokuts and the Yuki.

Featuring primarily portraits, these images also depict styles of basketry, cradle baskets and dwellings. In addition, there are examples of dance and bridal costumes. A highlight of this collection is the hand-colored print, "A Gem of Basketry-Southern Yokuts". Because there are only 34 examples of hand-colored prints in the entire North American Indian set of books, they are relatively rare. Overall, this is a unique opportunity to acquire a collection of photogravures from one volume in The North American Indian set of books.
sheet: 12.5 x 9.5 in. (31.75 x 24.13 cm.) and 9.5 x 12.5 in. (24.13 x 31.785 cm.)

  • Provenance: The Christopher G. Cardozo Collection
  • Literature:
    The North American Indian (1907 – 1930), Volume 14.
  • Condition: There are 57 prints on Japanese vellum, 6 prints on Japanese gampi tissue and 6 prints on Holland Van Gelder.

In general, all of the prints are in very good condition overall.

The hand-colored print, "A Gem of Basketry — Southern Yokuts" shows tissue transfer marks in the margins of the sheet, which is typical in Curtis' hand-colored, volume photogravures.

"A Coast Pomo" has a couple of creases at the upper right corner of the sheet. (The image area is not affected.)
