This is one of the more intriguing photographs from Edward Curtis' The North American Indian. Published in portfolio VI, which features the Great Plains tribes of the Piegan and Cheyenne, this image shows a Cheyenne man standing fully cloaked in traditional garments amidst a dense, shadowy forest. The purpose of his silent wanderings is a chance encounter with his female partner. Printed in photogravure, the technique and artisanship of which had reached its zenith by the early 1900's, the warm sepia hues and subtle, soft resolution complements Curtis' imagery perfectly.
  • Condition: This photogravure is in vey good condition overall.
Previous conservation by Joel Oppenheimer, Chicago.
