  • (Possibly) "Mixed Show," Gallery A, Taos, New Mexico, July 30 - August 19, 1961

"The label 'mixed show' applied to [the Gallery A] exhibition is indicative of the scope of Bisttram's work. It will contain paintings that are broad and fluid in treatment, others that are tight and exacting in drawing. Oil, casein, watercolor, and lacquer give Bisttram's paintings the textures essential to the moods expressed." - Taos News, July 27, 1961, p. 7.

Born in Hungary in 1895, Emil Bisttram first visited Taos in 1930, seeking refuge from post-crash New York. Though initially frustrated by the grandeur of the landscape, he returned to found the Taos School of Art and co-founded the Transcendental Painting Group in 1938, aiming to depict spiritual realms through abstraction.

Emil Bisttram's "Reflections (Red), 1960," a lacquer on panel, exemplifies his late abstract style, shaped by his spiritual and metaphysical interests. The choice of lacquer, a less common medium in fine art, gives the work a rich, polished finish, intensifying the vibrancy of the reds and other geometric forms present in the composition. This material creates a sleek, reflective quality, adding depth and a modernist sheen that complements Bisttram's focus on the interplay between light, color, and form.

Emil Bisttram's "Reflections (Red), 1960" was likely included in a "mixed show" of his work at Gallery A in Taos, held from July 30 to August 19, 1961. This exhibition highlighted Bisttram's versatility with works that spanned representational to abstract and non-objective styles. Bisttram remained a central figure in New Mexico's art scene until his death in 1976, leaving a lasting impact on American abstract art.
