Ernest Lawson was a prominent American painter and a key figure in the American Impressionist movement. Born in Nova Scotia, Lawson moved to the United States as a child, where he eventually attended the Art Students League of New York under the mentorship of William Merritt Chase and John Henry Twachtman. Lawson studied with members of the Ten American Painters, a group that sought to promote Impressionism in America and included Childe Hassam and J. Alden Weir. He exhibited widely, with his work featured in prestigious institutions such as the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He received numerous awards, including the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship in 1929, and today his works are held in major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Ernest Lawson's painting "Sangre de Cristo," created around 1910, is a stunning example of his ability to capture the beauty of the American landscape through the Impressionist lens. This little gem portrays the Sangre de Cristo Mountain range in Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico with vibrant hues and expressive brushwork.
