  • Provenance: The Artist, 1989
    Private Collection, New Mexico

Esteban Vicente was a pivotal figure in the New York art world, establishing his studio at 88 East 10th St in 1950, where he became associated with key figures like Meyer Schapiro and Clement Greenberg. Throughout the 1950s and 60s, Vicente exhibited in major galleries, including Leo Castelli and André Emmerich Gallery. Additionally, Vicente also helped organize and participated in in the landmark 9th Street Show in Greenwich Village in 1951, an event that firmly established Abstract Expressionism in the U.S. art canon.

Over the course of his career, Vicente held teaching positions at several prestigious institutions, including Princeton University, where he was artist-in-residence and served on the faculty from 1965 to 1966 and again from 1969 to 1972. His influence as an educator extended to other leading universities, such as the University of California, Berkeley, New York University, and Yale University. Esteemed poet John Ashbery once praised Vicente as "one of the best teachers of painting in America."

Vicente's works can be found in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among many others.
