Ford Ruthling's work reflects his deep appreciation for the cultural heritage and natural beauty of the Southwest. Growing up in New Mexico he was well acquainted with artists in the area – including William Penhallow Henderson, Will Shuster, Josef Bakos and John Sloan, and he studied art at the University of New Mexico under Randall Davey. After military service, he served as curator of exhibitions at the Museum of International Folk Art, working under Alexander Girard. 'Zia Pots with Three Ears of Corn', commissioned in 1984, depicts a traditional Zia pot, which often symbolize sustenance and the importance of agriculture, with three ears of corn further represent abundance and connection to the land. His oil paintings of Pueblo Indian pottery were featured on a series of postage stamps issued in 1977, and in 1993, he was named a Santa Fe Living Treasure. Ruthling's work can be found in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the Dallas Museum of Fine Art, and the New Mexico Museum of Art, among others.
