Gene Kloss was an American printmaker and painter best known for her evocative etchings of the landscapes and Pueblo ceremonials of northern New Mexico. Trained at UC Berkeley and the California School of Fine Arts, she first visited Taos in 1925 and soon split her life between California and the Taos art colony before eventually settling there permanently. Working entirely from her own plates and often from memory, she created more than 600 intaglio prints, combining etching, drypoint, aquatint, and other techniques, and became one of the most respected printmakers in the United States, elected an Academician of the National Academy of Design in 1972, with her work now held by major museums including the Met, the Smithsonian, and the National Gallery of Art.
