  • Provenance: Private Collection, New Mexico

"A Tarahumara Portfolio", published by the University of Nevada Press, is a limited-edition set of six full-color prints after George Carlson's pastel studies of the Tarahumara (Rarámuri) people of northern Mexico. Each print presents a different scene that captures the color, intensity, and quiet dignity of Tarahumara life, from daily activities to ceremonial moments, translated with Carlson's rich, layered pastel touch. The images were printed in a small edition of 300 on 100% rag, each plate signed and numbered by the artist, and housed in a protective portfolio with an accompanying essay by Carlson on the Tarahumara. Issued as a benefit for the University of Nevada's scholarly publishing program, the portfolio forms a key graphic counterpart to Carlson's broader Tarahumara project of the 1970s–80s, in which he sought to document a traditional culture he knew was rapidly changing.
