Gustave Baumann was a German-born American printmaker and painter and one of the leading figures in the early 20th-century color woodcut revival. Born in Magdeburg, he immigrated to Chicago as a child, apprenticed in commercial engraving, and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago before returning to Germany to train at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Munich. In 1918 he moved to Santa Fe, where he became a central cultural presence, celebrated for luminous, meticulously layered woodblock prints of New Mexico's landscapes and architecture, often bearing his "hand-in-heart" emblem, while also working across painting and design.
  • Condition: This piece is in very good condition overall. There is some very slight foxing at the right margin edge of the visible sheet. Overall, a fine example of this print.
