This print showcases Gustave Baumann's fascination with marionettes, which began long before his arrival in Santa Fe. According to Gala Chamberlain, the author of the artist's catalogue raisonné, the marionettes featured in this piece were discovered backstage at the Yale Puppeteers' theater on Olvera Street in Los Angeles. Baumann would eventually make about 60 of his own marionettes. Printed in two or three colors, the marionettes appear suspended in front of a shadow, with intricate woodcut detailing that emphasizes their strings and stage elements, evoking the theatrical essence of these lively characters.
