Gustave Baumann

(German-American, 1881 - 1971)

The Big Day, 1909/1938

color woodcut, edition 23 of 125
Second Edition
signed lower right: Gustave [hand-in-heart chop] Baumann
editioned lower right: II 23-125
titled lower left: THE BIG DAY

Baumann carved and printed this image first in 1909 under the title "Country Circus," and was among the last few images recorded by Baumann under the heading Chicago. As Baumann was wont to do when he revisited an image, the palette and title changed dramatically between the first edition and the second - printed nearly three decades apart - from an autumnal burnt orange and gray, to a lively grass green and plum. The reports are not intended to nor do they substitute for physical examination by a buyer or the buyer's advisors. The condition reports are prepared by SFAA staff members who are not art conservators or restorers, nor do they possess the qualifications needed for comprehensive evaluation. Each condition report is an opinion of the staff member and should not be treated as a statement of fact. The absence of a condition report does not imply anything as to the condition of a particular lot.
