Harry Fonseca was a Sacramento-born Native artist of Nisenan Maidu heritage (also described as Hawaiian and Portuguese), and an enrolled citizen of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians. He studied at Sacramento City College and at Cal State Sacramento with artist/mentor Frank LaPena. He became especially renowned for his long-running "Coyote" series, of which this piece is an example, reimagining the trickster figure in contemporary, often urban settings to challenge stereotypes and expand expectations of Native art.
