  • Provenance: Private Collection, Texas

Helen Greene Blumenschein was a Taos-based painter and printmaker known for evocative Southwestern landscapes and a wide-ranging, experimental approach to media. Born in Brooklyn, she grew up between New York and Taos with the family relocating to Taos when she was ten. She studied in Paris in the late 1920s, including with André Lhote, and later trained in printmaking at New York's Art Students League, developing a particular strength in lithography and silkscreen. Her subject matter extended beyond New Mexico to scenes from Europe and the East Coast, and she worked fluidly in oil, watercolor, charcoal, and graphic processes. She also maintained deep ties to Taos civic and cultural life, including historical and archaeological interests, and helped preserve the Blumenschein family home and legacy.
  • Condition: This vibrant print is in very good condition. There is very slight toning to the sheet just below the image area, along with some loss at the lower margin edge of the sheet. Overall, it remains a fine example of this image by Blumenschein.
