Hiroyuki Doi is a self-taught Japanese draughtsman known for mesmerizing monochrome ink drawings built from countless tiny circles, patiently layered into vortexes that can suggest everything from cellular life to constellations. A former chef, Doi began making art in the 1980s following the death of his younger brother, an event he has described as the emotional catalyst for a therapeutic, meditative practice that can take months to complete on washi paper using a fine drawing pen. His work entered wider international view through the outsider-art world, including presentations at the Outsider Art Fair and museum exhibitions such as Obsessive Drawing, and has continued to be exhibited by galleries and institutions in the U.S., Europe, and Japan.
