John Sloan was an influential American artist and teacher. Born in Pennsylvania, he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and developed an early style that emphasized the gritty realities of city life, often portraying scenes of labor, leisure, and the vibrancy of the American urban experience. He was a member of 'The Eight', one of the exhibitors in the Armory Show of 1913, and taught at institutions including PAFA and the Art Students League in New York. He helped found and was long-term President of the Society of Independent Artists, and his works are held in major museum collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

His Gloucester landscapes represents a significant phase in Sloan's artistic development, marking a turning point as he moved away from the Ashcan School style. Between 1914 and 1918, the Sloans spent summers in Gloucester, Massachusetts, with artist friends, including Charles and Alice Winter and Randall Davey. Using a brightened and emboldened palette, he would explore a rich variety of approaches and styles showcasing the rugged coast of Massachusetts. 'Blue Rocks, Gloucester', created in 1915, has been exhibited at the Museum of New Mexico and the Texas Museum of Fine Arts. In 1919, with Robert Henri's recommendation, the Sloans traveled to Santa Fe, New Mexico, for the summer, and they returned almost every summer thereafter.
