  • Provenance: Private Collection, New Mexico

John Nieto was an American painter closely associated with Santa Fe and the art of the Southwest, best known for vivid, high-key color and bold, expressive images of Native American figures, wildlife, and Western subjects. Born in Denver, he earned his B.F.A. from Southern Methodist University in 1959 and went on to build an internationally exhibited career marked by a distinctive Fauvist-inflected palette and graphic style. In 1994, he received New Mexico's Governor's Award for Achievement in the Arts, and his work is represented in the New Mexico Museum of Art.
