John Pfahl (American, 1939–2020) is a key figure in staged/constructed landscape photography. In Altered Landscapes he made small, ephemeral interventions on-site—strings, tape, paper, colored cord, leaves—then photographed the results with a view camera. Nothing was retouched in the darkroom; the "alteration" existed only long enough to be photographed. The series plays with perspective, horizon, framing, and the photographer's point of view, aligning Pfahl with 1970s Land Art/Conceptual art, but with a light, non-destructive touch. His work is held by MoMA, the Met, Getty, SFMOMA, Eastman Museum, etc.

For "Australian Pines, Fort De Soto Park, Florida" (1977), Pfahl wrapped each tree trunk with a narrow white band exactly at the horizon line, so from the camera's position the bands align into a continuous stripe that visually "splices" sea and sky—an elegant demo of how photography constructs landscape through viewpoint and framing.
  • Condition: This photograph is in very good condition overall.

The condition reports for the lots offered by Santa Fe Art Auction (SFAA) are provided as a courtesy and convenience for potential buyers. The reports are not intended to nor do they substitute for physical examination by a buyer or the buyer's advisors. The condition reports are prepared by SFAA staff members who are not art conservators or restorers, nor do they possess the qualifications needed for comprehensive evaluation. Each condition report is an opinion of the staff member and should not be treated as a statement of fact. The absence of a condition report does not imply anything as to the condition of a particular lot. Buyers are reminded that the limited warranties are set forth in the Terms and Conditions of Sale and do not extend to condition. Each lot is sold as-is.
