The Gregory Warren Nelson Collection, New Mexico

Born in Vienna, Austria, Joseph Amadeus Fleck immigrated to the United States in 1921, settling in New York City, where he studied at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League. His early work reflected the influence of European art movements, but he later developed a style that integrated the rich colors and forms of American Impressionism.

Fleck's artistic journey took him to New Mexico, where he became enamored with the vibrant landscapes and unique cultural heritage of the region. This portrait depicts Dona Teresa, a prominent figure in the Taos community and a significant artist during the early 20th century. It retains its original Carrig-Rohane frame carved by master carver Feliciano Nemiccolo.

Other important works by the artist are in numerous prestigious collections, including the New Mexico Museum of Art and the Denver Art Museum.
  • Condition: Very good condition commensurate with age. Examined under blacklight. Relined. Faint stretcher bar marks and minor craquelure overall. (Feliciano Nemiccolo frame in good condition, minor wear commensurate with age).
