  • Provenance: Private Collection, Florida

This early work by Joseph Henry Sharp captures a tranquil Northern European scene, likely created during his travels through Ireland, Holland, Belgium, and France in 1896. Rendered with Sharp's characteristic sensitivity to atmosphere and light, the painting hints at the quiet lyricism that would later define his celebrated landscapes of the American West. Though best known as the "father of the Taos Art Colony," Sharp's European studies deeply informed his mastery of tone and composition, as seen in this intimate and evocative painting.
  • Condition: This original work is in good overall condition. There is an historic repair stabilizing a minor fissure in the board, visible upon close inspection of the recto. Examination under blacklight shows scattered spots and passages of retouching. Overall, this atmospheric painting, in a period frame, offers a strong overall presentation.
