  • Provenance: Private Collection, Colorado

J.R. Willis, born in 1876 in Georgia, began his career as a political cartoonist and fashion illustrator before studying painting with Robert Henri in New York and later working in Hollywood as a backdrop artist. A stop in Arizona in 1917 led him to abandon plans for New York and instead settle in the Southwest, where he established a photography studio in Gallup, New Mexico, and began painting Native American subjects from his photographs. Known for his vivid portraits of American Indians and his striking autumn landscapes of golden aspens—earning him the nickname "Aspen King"—Willis also traveled to Cuba, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic to paint landscapes. He later moved to Albuquerque's Old Town, where he became a well-known local figure for his dramatic flair and continued to paint until his death. His work is held in several museums, including in Albuquerque, Japan, and Colombia.
