Karen Karnes (1925-2016) was born in New York City to poor Russian and Polish immigrant garment workers. She developed a passion for the visual arts while studying at the High School of Music and Art in New York, and then at Brooklyn College, where she graduated with a design degree in 1946. She then studied at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University and in 1952 she, and her then husband David Weinrib, were potters-in-residence at Black Mountain College where they remained until 1954. Her work is in numerous museum collections including the American Museum of Ceramic Art, Pomona, CA; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England.
