Moroccan-born artist Lalla Essaydi (b. 1956) is known for re-staging 19th-century "Orientalist" harem fantasies and reclaiming them from a contemporary Arab woman's point of view. In the series Les Femmes du Maroc (c. 2005–08) she photographs Moroccan women posed within domestic interiors she has covered in hand-applied henna calligraphy—text written by the artist across skin, textiles and walls. Henna (a women's medium) and Arabic calligraphy (historically a male domain) collide to critique the Western gaze while also reflecting on gendered codes within Arab visual culture.
