Margarete Bagshaw was a painter and sculptor, celebrated for her bold abstract works that fused modernist techniques with indigenous influences. The daughter of renowned artist Helen Hardin and the granddaughter of Santa Clara Pueblo painter Pablita Velarde, Bagshaw continued the legacy of artistic excellence in her family while forging her own distinct path. Her work, often characterized by vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and dynamic forms, explored themes of spirituality, culture, and personal growth. She exhibited widely, and her work is included in prestigious collections such as the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture in Santa Fe. In addition to her artistic achievements, she co-founded the Golden Dawn Gallery in Santa Fe, which was a prominent space for promoting Native women artists.

'Choices, 2003' is composed of a smaller panel inset into a larger panel, which symbolizes the paths or options within the broader context of life's larger journey or narrative, emphasizing the significance of decisions within the whole.
