  • Provenance: Private Collection, New York

St. Louis–based photographer Michael Eastman began photographing Havana in the late 1990s, returning over many years and publishing the work as the book Havana (Prestel, 2011). The series focuses on grand yet time-worn interiors and façades—stairwells, parlors, barber shops, theaters—shot in available natural light with long exposures and a rigorously frontal viewpoint. Eastman does not stage the spaces or include figures; instead, the patina of peeled paint, patterned tile, and drapery carries the human presence. The result is a blend of architectural portrait and still life, with saturated color and classical symmetry that turns decay into opulent abstraction. "Red Bathroom, Havana" is one of Eastman's most recognizable interiors from the project.
  • Condition: This print is in very good condition overall.
A few very minor, scattered surface scuffs only visible upon close inspection in direct reflected light.
    Mounted to archival foamcore.

The condition reports for the lots offered by Santa Fe Art Auction (SFAA) are provided as a courtesy and convenience for potential buyers. The reports are not intended to nor do they substitute for physical examination by a buyer or the buyer's advisors. The condition reports are prepared by SFAA staff members who are not art conservators or restorers, nor do they possess the qualifications needed for comprehensive evaluation. Each condition report is an opinion of the staff member and should not be treated as a statement of fact. The absence of a condition report does not imply anything as to the condition of a particular lot.
