Area Textile, ca. 1900

handspun wool, natural dyes

Includes TLS dated 1912 from A. Arnold Trading Post attributing weaving to Juanita Asdzáá Tl'ógí (Weaver Woman) (Diné [Navajo], 1845-1910), wife of Chief Manuelito.

"Dear Friend:-
The Ring and also your kind letter received, for which I want to thank you all very much. I also received several days ago a Box from the Smith Family, and as I have mis-placed that letter with address I will have to ask you thank them for their kindness in our behalf. Well Joe you have asked me about the Navajo Blanket I sent you, I was under the impression every one knew there [sic] history. The next time you go to Jonn Wanamakers Store ask for the Navajo Blanket department, make them think you intend to purchase, and they will give you the history of Navajo Blanket Weaving. I will try to tell you a little about them. The Blankets are woven from Wool, sheared from the Indians sheep, and carded, dyed, spun and woven by the Navajo Squaw. All the work being done by hand. To make a blanket, such as you have requires about 28 to 32 days labor on the part of the Indian, and as a Curio, the Blanket you have is far above any think Wanamaker can produce, as it was woven by the Wife of Old Manuelito the last War Chief of the Navajo Tribe, who happens to be a personal friend of mine. This is the Chief that was called to Washington D.C. during Grants administration regarding the western Indians. I am sending you 2 cards, the one shows a weaver at work, the other a Navajo Boy in its cradle. Well Joe I guess I will have to cut it off for this time. With kindest regards to all, I beg to remain, Your friend, a.a."
