  • Provenance: Private Collection, Florida

Pablo Soria is an Argentine photographic artist who immigrated to Miami in 1995. Soria carries on his native country's tradition of agonized existentialism to his new home with a visually wrenching reflection on his spiritual and physical displacement. Soria wrestles with the tension of leaving and arriving, whether it is physically, spiritually, or both. He grapples with the strain of immigrating and with questions of assimilating or maintaining one's identity. For Soria's series entitled, "The Yearning" he explores the emotions, expectations, and memories associated with leaving one's native country. In his words, "It's an autobiographical vision of time, shaded by the obsession with the memory of the country left behind, love, childhood, death, and loss." His work is firmly rooted in feelings of nostalgia and an obsession with the memories of the place left behind. Soria's work is not only emotionally layered, but also physically. He often employs layering with sandblasting, acrylic painting, placing film prints over materials such as wood or paper in order to contribute to a layered dialogue with the viewer.

Pablo Soria was born in San Miguel de Tucuman, Argentina in 1964. He received his BFA from the School of Fine Arts, National University of Tucuman in 1989 and a fellowship from the Fondo Nacional de las Artes for painting, completing his studies in Buenos Aires in 1991. His works are part of major private and public collections: Museo de Arte Moderno, Buenos Aires Argentina; Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Buenos Aires, Argentina; Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale, USA; Museo del Barrio Collection, New York, USA; Museum of Fine Art, Houston, TX, USA; MDCC, Kendall Campus, Florida, USA; Miami Dade, Art in Public Places, Artbank Collection, Florida, USA; The Zabludowicz Collection, Londres.
