  • Provenance: Private Collection, Illinois

R.C. Gorman was born in Chinle, Arizona, and grew up in the Navajo Nation, where family and community traditions shaped his early artistic life. After studying and working in places including Mexico City and San Francisco, he became deeply influenced by Mexican art and stone lithography, which helped fuel his rise as one of the most widely collected Native artists of the late 20th century. In Taos, New Mexico, he purchased the Manchester Gallery space and in 1968 founded the Navajo Gallery, widely cited as the first Indigenous-owned fine art gallery of its kind, while building an iconic body of work, especially lithographs and paintings, celebrated for their elegant, modernist depictions of Native women.
