Ralph Albert Blakelock studied at the National Academy of Design and is today best known for his tonal moonlit landscapes and forest scenes which emphasize mood and atmosphere. "Forest Scene" is included in University of Nebraska's Blakelock Inventory (No. 1473) and was prominently featured in exhibitions included "Blakelock: Visionary in Context," held at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum from 1997-1998, and at esteemed institutions such as the Mitchell Museum in Mt. Vernon, Illinois; Heckscher Museum in Huntington, New York; and the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, Washington. His works are also included in various museum collections, including the Pensacola Museum of Art in Florida and the Paine Art Center in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Despite his recognition today, poverty and discouragement with his difficult career as an artist led to Blakelock suffering a mental breakdown. He was institutionalized in 1899, coinciding with the birth of his ninth child. Interestingly, as his mental health deteriorated, his reputation as an artist began to grow, with the art world becoming increasingly captivated by the narrative of an artist who "had descended into madness."
