  • Literature:
Gail Gelburd and Alex Rosenberg, A Graphic Odyssey: Romare Bearden as Printmaker, Exh. cat., University of Pennsylvania Press, 1992, fig. 46.

Romare Bearden's Odysseus series reimagines Homer's epic through the lens of African American experiences, exploring universal themes of struggle, exile, and the longing for home. In 1977, Bearden created twenty collages based on The Odyssey, blending vibrant colors and complex compositions with influences from jazz, Cubism, and African art. The series was praised when first exhibited at the Cordier & Ekstrom Gallery in New York. In 1979, Bearden translated six of these collages into screenprints, known as the Odysseus Suite. By setting parts of the story in West Africa, Bearden linked Odysseus' journey to the African diaspora, making the ancient tale resonate with contemporary audiences.
