Stanley Llewellyn Wood (1866–1928) was a Victorian English illustrator best known for his dynamic depictions of the American West and action-filled images of horses, widely featured in boys' adventure stories. Working with the London firm Chatto & Windus, his art was also exhibited locally, including seven pieces at the Royal Academy. A trip to South Dakota in 1888 inspired his Western-themed illustrations, many of which were published in Harper's. Praised by bookdealer Jeff Dykes as perhaps the greatest horse artist, Wood illustrated numerous adventure novels and contributed to periodicals like Black & White and The War Illustrated, capturing both colonial and wartime scenes with vivid detail.
