Tom Sachs is well-known for his embrace of "bricolage", having said a bricoleur is one "who hobbles together functional contraptions out of already given or collected materials, which he re-tools and re-signifies into new objects with novel uses, but more importantly, which he regenerates into a new, oscillating syntax: one of loss, gain, and more than anything, one of play."

Sachs, renowned for his subversive approach to sculpture, continues his exploration of the everyday, the industrial, and the absurd in "Important/Do Not Discard..." (2004). At first glance, this piece presents itself as a utilitarian object — a shipping panel complete with instructions to "CALL TOM SACHS' STUDIO FOR ANY QUESTIONS."

The handwritten text includes practical advice, such as "KEEP BEER + VODKA STOCKED & TOPPED UP DAILY" and reminders to clean up any spills, take out the trash, and vacuum daily, adding an irreverent, humorous touch that typifies Sachs' work. The black taped panel alongside the handwritten notes showcases Sachs' hallmark technique of using common materials, like duct tape and foam core, to comment on consumer culture and the difference between hand-made and mass-produced objects.

Sachs's works are held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, the Getty in Los Angeles, California, among many others.
