  • Provenance: Private Collection, New Mexico

The Journal of Contemporary Photography unites hand-pulled photogravures by many of today's most esteemed photographers—each plate made by Jon Goodman, a modern master of the process—with incisive criticism, poetry, and fiction by celebrated writers. Echoing the ambition of Stieglitz's Camera Work, the series marries luminous image-making with rigorous letters to create an uncommon dialogue between the visual and the literary. Under John Wood's editorship, every volume is thoughtfully conceived and exquisitely produced.
Volume I focuses on the "transcendent vision" of 15 major contemporary photographers, illustrated here in richly printed hand-pulled photogravure, in addition to a woodcut by the late Leonard Baskin. Writers include Pulitzer Prize winning poet Richard Wilbur; prize-winning novelists Ann Beattie and Robert Olen Butler; poet and critic Dana Gioia; Harvard professors and award winning historians John Stilgoe and John Stauffer; and Wales' great poet, the late R. S. Thomas, among many others.
