Wayne Justus is an American realist painter of the contemporary West, born in Escondido, California, and best known for cowboy subjects and Western scenes rendered in opaque watercolor, gouache, and oil. Early in life, while living in Fallbrook, California, he studied with the Spanish portrait painter Sebastian Capella, an experience that helped shape his development as an artist. Justus went on to build a career centered on historically grounded images of working cowboys and ranch life, and his work has been associated especially with the art of the contemporary American West.
