William Frej is a Santa Fe– and Mérida-based documentary photographer (and former architect/USAID foreign-service officer) who has spent 40+ years photographing Indigenous cultures and remote landscapes across Mesoamerica and Asia. His acclaimed books include Maya Ruins Revisited: In the Footsteps of Teobert Maler (2020), a 45-year survey of more than 180 Maya sites juxtaposed with 19th-century images by Maler; Seasons of Ceremonies: Rites and Rituals in Guatemala and Mexico (2021), duotone studies of living syncretic traditions; and Travels Across the Roof of the World: A Himalayan Memoir (2022), drawn from decades of high-country pilgrimages with Anne Frej. His work also encompasses extensive field photographs from Afghanistan (2009–10) during his USAID tenure.
  • Condition: This piece is in very good condition overall.

The condition reports for the lots offered by Santa Fe Art Auction (SFAA) are provided as a courtesy and convenience for potential buyers. The reports are not intended to nor do they substitute for physical examination by a buyer or the buyer's advisors. The condition reports are prepared by SFAA staff members who are not art conservators or restorers, nor do they possess the qualifications needed for comprehensive evaluation. Each condition report is an opinion of the staff member and should not be treated as a statement of fact. The absence of a condition report does not imply anything as to the condition of a particular lot.
