Camera Work was Alfred Stieglitz's exquisitely produced quarterly (1903–1917) for the Photo-Secession, created to prove photography was fine art. Each small gray-wrapped issue—printed on fine papers with hand-pulled photogravures, collotypes, and tissue guards—set a new standard for photographic publishing. Early issues championed Pictorialists such as Stieglitz, Steichen, Käsebier, Clarence White, and Coburn; later issues, tied to Stieglitz's gallery 291, bridged to modernism with essays and reproductions of Rodin, Matisse, Cézanne, and Picasso, culminating in Paul Strand's radical "straight" photographs in 1916–17. Revered for its craft and for charting the shift from Pictorialism to modern photography, it remains highly collectible—especially complete issues with all plates intact, Steichen's color/toned gravures, and the Strand portfolio in the final double number issue (49/50).

Ledel Gallery, founded in 1981 by photographer and collector Lee Male in New York City's SOHO art district, was a pioneering space dedicated to Fine Art Photography. Lee, inspired by mentors like Larry Colwell and her admiration for Edward S. Curtis, was able to build a significant photography collection. Her close ties with key figures like Cornell Capa allowed her to showcase renowned photographers such as Ruth Bernhard, Esther Bubley, and Barbara Morgan, alongside iconic masters like Berenice Abbott. Lee's dedication to promoting both established and emerging artists left an indelible mark on the photography world before her passing in 1997.
