  • Provenance: Private Collection, Oklahoma

Rain-in-the-Face (Lakota: Ité Omágažu), often styled "Chief" in period accounts, was a prominent Hunkpapa Lakota war leader born c.1835 near the forks of the Cheyenne River (Dakota Territory). He fought in the northern Plains wars of the 1860s–70s and became widely known after the 1876 Battle of the Little Bighorn, where he was among the Hunkpapa and their allies who defeated the 7th Cavalry. After the battle he followed Sitting Bull to Canada (early 1877), returned and surrendered in 1880 at Fort Keogh, and later lived at Standing Rock Agency, dying there in September 1905 at Bullhead Station.
